Recipe Substitutions

There are times when you get a recipe and you do not have everything that you need to complete it. There are times when you cannot use the ingredients because of allergies or dietary restrictions. But this does not mean that you cannot enjoy some good treats. I got some ideas from years of studying food. Got any more, please feel free to share.

  • If you have baking powder in your house, but you need baking soda, you are good. If your recipe calls for 1 tsp of baking soda, replace it with 3 tsp of baking powder. Your recipe may call for a dash of salt or ¼ tsp of salt. Baking powder is salty to the taste, so you will not need to add the salt for the recipe!

  • Say you ran out of flour to make cookies. You can use plain oatmeal(some call it rolled oats). Grind down some oatmeal until it is like a powder. Get the amount you need and get to work. If you need a cup of flour, you can replace it with a cup of the grinded down rolled oats.

  • So you want to make some cupcakes using the mix, but you want to avoid the oil and eggs? Use a can of soda(or pop, whatever you call it. Dark sodas like Pepsi and Coke work the best, but I love any kind of pop for this. Strawberry cake mix is good with Coke. You just put the cake mix in a bowl, open the can of soda right over the bowl and pour. You don’t have to wait for the pop to flatten out before using it. You only need 1 can for every box of cake mix. This will make you 24 cupcakes! How cool is that?
