Where have you been?

Oh my goodness, it has been a long time, right?

It has been weeks since I have been here. I will catch you up.

I have joined a sorority. Yes, I did. I spent 10 weeks in a pledge process with 3 other women that I have grown to really like. Maybe, even love. We all came from different backgrounds, states, economic situations. Yet, we bonded so quickly. I truly care for these women and I want nothing but the best for and from them.

Khamaia is the youngest, but she has been through a lot. She was a teen mom. She had her daughter at the age of 18. She gave birth alone without any medications. That is brave! She works so hard. She works full-time and she is going to college. Her daughter is smart and beautiful. It just shows to what a testament Maia is giving her daughter.

Nichelle is the pro. She is married and has 2 kids. She will do anything for those kids. She dealt with a lot during her pledge time, but she made sure that everything was done on time. There were plenty of times when she could have given up. I would have understood if she did, but she kept going. It is not the struggles that define you. It is how you overcome them.

Chasiti is the HR dynamo. She moved away from home for a job. Then she created a new job at a different company, and she excelled at that company. She is one of most beautiful women I have ever met. At just over 6 feet tall, she is a powerhouse. She is also in college, working on her degree in Human Resources Management. She is doing what it takes to not only keep her job, but take it to an even higher level. That girl is amazing.

I joined Alpha Pi Zeta Sorority, Inc. Yes, it is a plus-size sorority, but it is more than that. You don't have to be a big girl to join it. It is about body acceptance, self-confidence, and sisterhood. There is a platform to find women who can support you in a world that chooses not to unless it deems it necessary. It is a small group, and we became fast friends. We bonded over food, family experiences, and education. Some of the ladies go dancing together. They will have your back if you are one of them. For my induction, there were women who drove for over 8 hours to be there. They will find a reason to talk to you or see you. The ladies found it interesting that I grew up without rap music or "Black" things in my life. But they know that it makes me unique. Everyone is unique in their own sorority line. I can apply things differently compared to the other ladies. They love that my education was unique to me. It is more than a bunch of letters on your chest. They want to bond and connect with women who love the skin that they are in. We can laugh, scream, protest, and cry together. We can go out together and have a good time. This is a connection that we all seek.
